As a challenge to other clubs and organizations in Pearl River County, a local VFW chapter donated $1,000 to purchase additional barricades.

D.C. Breland, Quartermaster for VFW Post 11380, and Bob Geiger, Vice Commander for VFW Post 11380, made an appearance at the Picayune Police Department Friday to present a check to the Picayune Police Department for the additional barricades.

Currently the department has about 24 of the barricades due to previous donations from the Civic Woman’s club and Picayune Main street, which each donated 12 of the interlocking steel barricades.

The barricades are used primarily in the two parades held in Picayune, such as Picayune Main Street’s Krewe of Roses parade and the Civic Woman’s Club Christmas Parade. Currently the barricades the city has are used near the post office. More are needed to ensure the safety of the public and especially children.

“I ride in the parades and we’re in bad need of barricades,” Geiger said. “I would like to challenge other military organizations and civil clubs to help put barricades around the parade route,”

With that money donated by the VFW Post 11380 in Carriere about 10 more barricades will be purchased for use in the parades.

Police Chief Jim Luke said he hopes enough clubs and organizations will join forces to purchase enough to have 100 of the barricades.
