Picayune’s T.J. House was selected to the prestigious Dandy Dozen list as chosen by The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson last week.

On Monday, he celebrated that selection by shutting down the Defending Class 4A state champions.

House twirled a four hitter, striking out 13 and walking just four as the Maroon Tide moved to 3-0 on the young season with a 5-0 shutout win over Oak Grove in the annual Barry Harper Baseball Classic at Poplarville High.

House scattered four singles to the Warriors, and stranded eight base runners in earning his first win of the season.

“He pitched well,” Picayune head coach Cayne Stockstill said. “He was in control for most of the game, and he did a good job.”

House and Jake Martinez have been selected as team captains this season, but House has been making a name for himself with the Maroon Tide since he was a freshman.

“He has never backed down from any situation, and he always wants the ball,” Stockstill added. “You could see he had the talent to be special when he was young.”

On Monday, House’s teammates gave him an early 5-0 lead. Picayune got two hits from Jared Bales in the win and Evan Nicholson drove in a run as well while Jake Martinez and Brett Milner also drove in runs

House opened the season by pitching a perfect three strike out first inning against Hancock on Friday.

“Our kids and the assistant coaches have worked extremely hard in the off-season and that has helped us get off to this start,” Stockstill said, of his players and his staff that includes assistant coaches Bob Ford, Cody Stogner and Richard Imhoff.

The Maroon Tide look to make it 4-0 today, as play in the Barry Harper event continues and Picayune meets Columbia at 5 p.m., at PRCC.
