Picayune’s regular season this year was much more successful than last season.

The postseason, though, had the same result.

The Lady Tide fell to D’Iberville 58-44 in the opening round of the Region 8-4A Tournament, ending Picayune’s season.

The Lady Tide finish the season at 11-15, but went 0-26 last year.

“We played a better team tonight,” Picayune head coach Kristi Mitchell said. “I don’t think we really played that bad, they are just playing really well right now.”

The Lady Warriors have won five straight league games and move into the semifinals with the win.

The loss overshadowed a bit an outstanding game by Picayune’s Monique Brown, who tallied a game high 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

In fact, after Picayune trailed for most of the first quarter, Brown tallied back to back baskets to give the Lady Tide a 12-10 lead late in the first quarter.

The Lady Warriors, though, came back to lead 28-25 at halftime despite the fact that Brown had 14 points in the first half.

D’Iberville turned the game around in the third period, going on a 9-0 run to begin the frame and taking a 37-25 lead.

Lady Warrior 6-foot-4 center Raquel Burney had six straight points in the run and eight points in the quarter, as D’Iberville outscored Picayune 20-6 in the frame to take control of the game.

“They made some changes and they went to her more, and she responded,” Mitchell added. “They played very well after halftime.”

Karly Moran added nine for Picayune in the loss, while Kacie Burkhalter led four D’Iberville players in double figures with 16.

“We had a much better season this year, and we have a lot of experience coming back,” Mitchell concluded. “We have a lot to look forward to.”
