Residents in a group housing site in Pascagoula that is to be closed within days may get an extension from the relocation deadline, according to Federal Emergency Management Agency officials.

Hurricane Katrina victims living in the FEMA park on Ingalls Ave. were originally told they had until this Friday to relocate. Officials say 26 units at the park are still occupied.

“We’re working as hard as we can to find them permanent housing,” said FEMA spokesman Jim Foster.

The Ingalls Avenue park is one of four in Pascagoula. The city council last year voted to close all four but never set definite dates.

The exact number of residents still living in Pascagoula parks was unavailable, but Foster said it has decreased in recent months.

In January, an official with the FEMA Mississippi Transitional Recovery Office told city leaders that the federal agency was trying to have permanent housing for all park residents by May 1.

Last week, the agency said it had identified 2,843 available rental units.
