Much of downtown Jackson’s business district was without power Thursday evening after a brief electrical storm moved through the area, followed by heavy rain.

The federal courthouse, the Jackson Police Department’s downtown precinct, and several office buildings, including Capitol Towers and Regions Bank, were among those in the dark.

Rain did not initially accompany the storm, but it carried several lightning strikes across the area around 6 p.m. About 30 minutes later, a thunderstorm pushed through the area, too.

Cars crept through downtown, navigating dark city streets without lights or traffic signals. Workers were visible on at least one high rise rooftop, apparently working on a building generator as the rain fell.

Checky Herrington, a spokesman for Entergy Mississippi, said the company is “reasonably sure” that lightning struck one of its transmission lines.

“We’re looking into the situation. It obviously just happened. We’re trying to find out exactly what happened,” Herrington said.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many people or businesses were affected by the outage, however Herrington said it’s “pretty much all of downtown Jackson.”
