Even though work is ongoing at Friendship Park ball fields, baseball and softball seasons are expected to begin on time this season.

Registration is ongoing and will continue on Feb. 23, and March 1, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. for ages four through 16. Parents can register their children at the soccer field concession stand. The maximum age to join the Picayune Youth Athletics Association base ball team or softball team is 15 for boys and 16 for girls, Friendship Park Recreation Directors Ryan Moreaux Jr.

Tryouts for teams will be until 3 p.m. during both registration days.

“It’s just so the coaches can pick the teams,” Moreaux said.

Currently more than $1 million in renovation work is being conducted on the fields. That work includes new light poles, fencing, canopies and dugouts.

The work should be completed before opening day, which should take place sometime in early April. The exact opening day will be decided by the PYAA who is running the league, Moreaux said.

Fees to register for softball will be $60 and baseball registration fees will be $70.
