Picayune, Poplarville split

Picayune and Poplarville split a pair of Region 8-4A games Friday night.

The sixth ranked and league leading Maroon Tide won handily 82-48.

Picayune moved to an impressive 21-3 on the year and stayed a perfect 11-0 on league play with the win.

Poplarville dropped to 3-17 overall and 1-8 in the region with the loss.

The Maroon Tide rolled out to a quick 17-4 lead and then doubled the Hornets at 34-17 mid way through the second stanza and rolled to the win.

Brandon Fortenberry scored a game high 21 points to pace Picayune, while Chris Dees added 15 points and seven rebounds and David McClain chipped in nine points.

Poplarville’s Lavelle Henry and Blake Dunston scored 14 points apiece to lead the Hornets.

The Lady Hornets made it a split of things on the evening as they avenged an earlier loss to the Lady Tide with a resounding 58-32 victory.

The Lady Hornets used an 18-3 advantage in the second quarter to break open a close game and take a 29-13 lead into halftime and Picayune never got within single digits again. Poplarville’s Daiquari Raine poured in a game high 21 points to lead the Lady Hornets to the win, while Policia Travis added 16 and Larke Nightengale 10 to the winning cause.

Poplarville moves to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in league play with the win.

Picayune got 11points from Karly Moran as the Lady Tide fell to 11-11 overall and 2-7 in league play.

Both Picayune teams wrap up Region 8-4A play by hosting arch-rival Pearl River Central on Tuesday.

Both Poplarville teams remain in region play as well as they host Bay High.

PRC Swept

BAY ST. LOUIS — Pearl River Central dropped a pair of Region 8-4A games on the road on Friday at Bay High.

The Tigers beat the Blue Devils in exciting fashion 49-48.

Je’Barr Locure and Cody Ladner each tallied 18 points apiece to pace PRC, which dropped to 4-19 overall and 2-6 in league play.

The Lady Devils fell 57-47, falling to 5-15 overall and 1-5 in league play.

Kayla Drummond tallied a game high 19 points to led PRC while Brooke Eccles added 16.

Both PRC teams travel to Picayune Tuesday night.

PRCC hoops

Pearl River Community College swings back into action on Monday as both the Wildcats and the Lady Wildcats host East Central in a pair of games beginning at 5 p.m.

The PRCC teams are coming off a sweep of homestanding Jones on Thursday.

The Lady Wildcats won 85-78 to improve to 13-4 overall and 4-2 in division play, while the Wildcats took a 73-68 overtime victory and are now 11-6 and 4-2. JCJC’s women dropped to 9-8 and 2-4, while its men are now 7-10 and 3-3.
