Authorities say a Long Beach man is in stable condition and recovering from a gunshot wound he sustained Thursday in a shootout with police.

It wasn’t immediately clear why officers were called to the modest suburban home on Mount Bass Road, but when they got there, a 25-year-old man opened the front door and began shooting, Police Chief Wayne McDowell said.

The gunman, whose name has not been released, then holed up in the home with his mother, who police officers later rescued.

About 45 minutes after firing at officers, the gunman slipped out a side door and tried to escape, but was “surprised” by waiting officers, McDowell said.

“The officers identified themselves and told him to drop it, but instead, he raised it at them,” McDowell said.

McDowell said an officer then shot and wounded the gunman. The officer’s name was not immediately made public.

The suspect was listed in stable condition at Memorial Hospital at Gulfport. He faces felony assault charges.

McDowell said the wounded man was wearing a military-style flak jacket and had an arsenal of loaded guns and extra ammunition.
