Property owners have until Sept. 3 to close a Vancleave trailer park that sprang up after Hurricane Katrina.

Jackson County supervisors voted this week not to allow an exception to county zoning that would’ve kept the 40-acre park open. It was established at the end of 2005 after a contractor, working in the St. Martin area, needed a way to house employees and store equipment.

The park has held as many as 19 travel trailers or RVs.

The trailers were using two wells, two septic tanks and power poles, said Jackson County planning director Michele Coats.

The county requires an RV park to have a central sewer, parking lot, recreation facilities and a lighted area for bathroom facilities. The Vancleave park met none of the requirements.

Coats said there are two letters of noncompliance issued by the state Health Department in the file and no letter stating it was in compliance.
