A Long Beach man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing a National Guardsman who served two tours in Iraq.

Robert Lewis White, 46, pleaded guilty in June to driving drunk and hitting 23-year-old William Evans on March 21, 2006.

In June, White told Circuit Judge Jerry O. Terry he drank about eight beers in a three-hour period at his home and the home of a friend.

Prosecutors said White was backing out of a bar when he hit Evans. White told the judge he didn’t see Evans’ motorcycle. He also ran from patrol officers.

On Monday, Terry sentenced White to 25 years on the drunk driving charge and five years for running from police. Ten years were suspended, giving White 20 years to serve. He would be eligible for parole once 80 percent of his sentence is served.
