Daniel Cole, deputy director of Panola County Emergency Management, said the cause of the fire was under investigation by the state fire marshal’s office.

Fires in Panola County have claimed eight lives this year, the most in any county.

“We’re in the process of researching what we can do to lower those numbers,” Cole said. “We can’t pinpoint anything right now.”
