Picayune man charged in tragic auto accident

A Picayune man is being charged with negligent homicide for his involvement in a fatal car crash on Interstate 12 Friday afternoon.

The accident took place on I-12 eastbound at mile marker 83.9 at 2:43 p.m. Two vehicles, a 1986 Chevy pickup and a 2005 Buick Century were involved in the accident, according to a release from the Louisiana State Police Troop L.

Picayune native, Maurice J. Tassin, 21, was driving the pickup east bound on I-12 when for an unknown reason he lost control of the vehicle and left the road, crossing the median. After crossing the median the pickup entered the westbound lanes of I-12, and then impacted the Buick, partially head on, that was traveling west on the interstate, the release states.

The driver of the Buick, identified as John M. Todd, 47, of Slidell, La., suffered fatal injuries in the crash, the release states.

Tassin was transported to NorthShore Regional Medical Center in Slidell with moderate injuries. He will be charged with negligent homicide and careless operation upon his release from the hospital, the release states.

Currently it’s unknown if driver impairment was a factor in the crash but toxicology examination results are pending. Trooper Canulette is continuing his investigation into the incident.
