One person is dead and a police officer is recovering from a gunshot wound after a four-hour standoff Wednesday between authorities and a local man.

Police Chief James Varnell said officers responded to a “shots fired” call around 8 p.m. Tuesday, but could not immediately determine where the shot had originated. He said police units, including a SWAT team from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, sealed off a two-block area around the home.

“We had a police officer shot and one of the men inside the house is dead,” Varnell said.

Waveland Police Officer Charlie Lipps was treated and released at Hancock County Medical Center, a spokesman said Wednesday.

Varnell said the incident ended about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday when the SWAT team stormed the house and found one man dead in the house.

Varnell declined to give additional details.
