Even though he graduated from Pearl River Central High less than two weeks ago, there will be no summer vacation for Mike Lehmann.

Lehmann, the all-state standout pitcher for the Blue Devils the past two seasons, was drafted by the Kansas City Royals organization on Friday in the annual Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

And, on Monday night, he signed a contract with the team and will be off to Arizona on Wednesday morning to begin his pro career.

“It’s always been a dream of mine since I was just a kid to play pro baseball, and now it’s going to happen,” Lehmann said. “I wanted to go pro as soon as possible if I had the chance, and the Royals have given me that chance.”

Lehmann wasn’t drafted as high as he originally thought he might get picked, as the Royals selected him with the second pick of the 20th round making him the 606th pick overall. There were indications to Lehmann from some scouts that he may go in the first five or ten rounds.

“It’s was pretty weird the way it happened, especially when everyone said I was going higher,” Lehmann added. “But that’s how it went. But they still offered me what I was looking for to sign.”

Lehmann had signed a college scholarship with Tulane last fall, but the pull of playing pro ball was too much.

“This is what I wanted to do,” he added. “It’s like a dream come true to be able to sign a pro contract.”

Lehmann will report to Phoenix first for Instructional League play and then be assigned to one of the Royals’ short-season Rookie League squads.

Lehmann helped PRC to back-to-back Division 8-4A titles.
