Children thrown from vehicle in accident on 59

Two small children were thrown from a vehicle during an accident on Interstate 59 on Thursday, Picayune Police Deputy Chief David Ervin said on Friday.

The accident, which happened just north of exit 4, is still under investigation, Ervin said. However, it appears that the vehicle, driven by Shanquel Whitehead, was headed south on I-59 when it veered off the road onto the right shoulder. Whitehead overcorrected by turning to the left, which possibly caused the crash, Ervin said.

“At this point in the investigation, alcohol does not appear to be involved,” Ervin said, but reiterated that the accident is still under investigation.

Whitehead and the other adult passenger, Demond Littles, were not thrown from the car, but two children, a nine-month-old and a three-year-old, were ejected from the vehicle.

“We don’t have any indication at this time that the children were restrained,” Ervin said.

Whitehead and Littles were taken to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, while the children were transported to Highland Community Hospital, said Ervin. Ervin called the injuries “moderate” and said none appear to be life-threatening.
