Keesler to host Special Olympics this weekend
Keesler Air Force base will host the annual Special Olympics Mississippi State Summer Games this weekend, with 852 athletes competing in events ranging from wheel chair races to volleyball.
The Special Olympics torch, which will be carried by law enforcement officers from across the state, will make its way onto the south Mississippi base about noon Friday, said Lt. Lisa L. Kostellic, a base spokeswoman.
Opening ceremonies are Friday night at the Levitow Training Support Facility parade grounds.
This is the 22nd year for Keesler to host the event. Airmen act as sponsors and accompany athletes to events including track and field, bocce, roller skating, golf, sailing and swimming.
