Lady Wildcats prepare to host their annual tourney

Pearl River’s Lady Wildcats have had a few days off to get ready for their own tournament affter dropping two games to Faulkner State recently.

PRCC dropped the first game 5-0, then FSCC unloaded with a lopsided 11-0 blasting the night cap. The Lady Wildcats dropped to 5-10 overall, while Faulkner improved to 9-5. The Lady Sun Chiefs swept Pearl River 8-0 and 13-2 in their previous meetings Feb. 15 in Bay Minette, Ala.

In the first game, FSCC scored two in the top of the second, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth to take the victory.

Jessica Dubuisson of Hancock County (6-5) was the losing pitcher in going the distance, striking out three, walking one, and hitting one batter; while Shannon Drexler picked up the win. She also hurled the distance, striking out four with no base on balls.

Dubuisson paced PRCC’s five-hit effort with a double and a single, while Viki Ferencak of Vancleave, Bridget Hannaford of Poplarville High, and Jessica Scallan of Metairie, La., all singled.

Faulkner finished with eight hits, led by Drexler and Mallory Meadows (two RBIs) who both homered, while Haley Thomley doubled (two RBIs) and Anglea Cassady, Kimberly Gardner, Lauren Givhan, Kristen Lambert, and Becky Lopez all singled.

Pearl River committed three errors in the game, while FSCC had one miscue.

In the nightcap, the Lady Sun Chiefs blew it open in the top of the first with five runs and never looked back. Faulkner added a solo run in the second, then iced the game via the eight-run rule with five more in the fourth.

Hannaford (1-2) picked up the loss in her three-and-one-thirds innings on the mound, while Dubuisson relieved in the fourth. Meadows was the winning pitcher in going the five-inning distance.

The Lady Wildcats managed on three hits in the contest with a double by Scallan and singles by Dubuisson and Whitney Sumpter of Poplarville High. Lopez led FSCC’s nine-hit effort with a homer and a single (two RBIs), while Jayme Kountz had two singles. Meadows hit a home run, Givhan and Meagan Jackson both doubled, and Lambert and Gardner both singled.

Faulkner played error-free, while Pearl River again committed three miscues.

Next up for the Lady Wildcats is their annual Pearl River Tournament set for Friday and Saturday at the Timberton Complex located adjacent to the William Carey University campus in Hattiesburg. PRCC will play John Wood CC (Ill.) at 3:30 p.m. and Itawamba at 6 p.m. Friday, then East Central at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
