Bridge does the shimmy

The Interstate 10 bridge over the Pearl River was tightened a bit Friday night after motorists reported that it was moving around enough to scare them.

While most bridges are built with some give in them to allow them to move somewhat to adjust to loads, the I-10 bridge apparently began moving a bit too much and had to be tightened up with a series of shims late Friday night, said Sharpie Smith, assistant district maintenance engineer for the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

Willie Huff, with MDOT, said some motorists had called Friday afternoon to report that the I-10 bridge over the Pearl River was moving around enough for the them to notice. Officials with the transportation department raced through Stennis Space Center from Interstate 59 around 2 p.m. Friday on their way to inspect the bridge following the first reports, Huff said.
