Some flash flooding and a tornado were reported in south Mississippi Tuesday before a powerful storm system pushed its way into neighboring Alabama.

There were no reports of injuries or extensive property damage. Some coastal areas remained under a tornado watch until midmorning.

Some trees were knocked down in Pearl River County, but no other damage was reported to the county’s Emergency Operations Center.

The National Weather Service said emergency management officials reported a tornado near Vancleave shortly before 7:30 a.m. Emergency officials in Jackson County said the tornado left debris on Interstate 10 near the Vancleave exit.

County officials said there had also been reports of flash flooding and of weakened trees being down in some communities.

Elsewhere, the system brought strong thunderstorms and periods of heavy rain to central and southern areas.

Most of the rain was expected to move out of Mississippi into Alabama during the late morning hours, with much colder weather taking over Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Some street flooding was reported in Hancock County but emergency officials said they had no reports of major problems before the system cleared the area.

In Harrison County, a sheriff’s department spokesman said there had been no damage reported but that heavy rain had occurred as the wall of storms pushed eastward.
