A 15-year-old who took a loaded gun to school on Tuesday will be expelled from school for a year and faces a felony charge, authorities said.

The seventh-grader, whose name was withheld because of his age, didn’t intend to harm anyone by bringing the .22-caliber pistol on the North Gulfport 7th and 8th grade campus, authorities said. The student showed the gun to a classmate near the end of the school day and someone told the principal about it.

The student had transferred to North Gulfport from another Mississippi school district in January, said Henry Arledge, superintendent of the Harrison County School District.

“He had not been a discipline problem, and we have no reason to believe that he brought the gun to school to shoot anyone,” Arledge said. “There were no threats, no nothing.”

The student was arrested on a felony charge of possession of a gun on a school campus and taken to the Youth Detention Center, Gulfport Police Chief Alan Weatherford said.

The teen was placed under the supervision of the Youth Court.

Under Mississippi law, Youth Court proceedings are confidential.

The student will be expelled from school for a year and not be allowed to attend any public school district in the state during that time, Arledge said.
