FEMA to auction trailers once used after hurricanes

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is putting up thousands of travel-trailers for sale at auction, saying they are too damaged to be repaired and put back into service.

The trailers were used to house victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. FEMA says if repair estimates on each trailer exceed $1,500, the vehicles will be put up for auction at the Hope Airport, where they are being stored.

Thousands of trailers still remain at Hope.

“There’s still 8,300 mobile homes. It’s my understanding they’ll reduce to 2,000 and move them to other areas around the country,” Hope Mayor Dennis Ramsey said.

The travel-trailers will be sold “as-is,” and most include the appliances and furniture inside.

“We’re coming to look and bid on one so we can use it to go camping,” said Tammy Baker of nearby Nashville.
