It’s a common courtesy now, but it could become a state law.

Mississippi legislators are considering bills that would require drivers to move over and make way for ambulances, fire trucks or other emergency vehicles responding to calls.

A bill that passed the House on Thursday would set a penalty of up to $250 for failing to get out of the way. The fine would jump to $1,000 if the failure to yield either damages the emergency vehicle or causes an injury to the emergency responder.

On Wednesday, the Senate passed a separate bill that’s nearly identical.

The two chambers will exchange bills for more work. They must agree on one final version before anything could go to the governor.

The bills are House Bill 397 and Senate Bill 2057.
