The U.S. Navy has awarded a $268.1 million contract boost to a unit of defense contractor Northrop Grumman Corp.

Pascagoula-based Northrop Grumman Ship Systems will provide additional design work on the Navy’s multi-mission destroyer, the DDG 1000 Zumwalt Class. The company has already received $39.4 million for advanced design work on the ship.

“This award reinforces the Navy’s confidence in our ability to execute the program to cost and on schedule,” Brian Cuccias, Northrop Grumman vice president of DDG 1000, said Monday in a company statement.

“We are extremely proud of our past performance and look forward to continuing this positive momentum through production and delivery,” he said.

The destroyer is being designed to provide advanced land attack capability in support of ground actions and to help ensure battle-space dominance, the Navy said.
