Ken Morgan has been certified the winner of a special election in House District 100, but a request to inspect the ballot boxes has put a hold on proceedings.

The circuit clerks in Jefferson Davis, Marion and Lamar counties on Wednesday certified the results of Tuesday’s runoff and declared Morgan the winner.

Morgan’s opponent, O.K. “Kenny” Moore, has filed documents asking to inspect the ballot boxes in the three counties.

“They have 12 days to examine the boxes and the election materials for irregularities,” said Circuit Clerk Jesse Loftin of Marion County. “And then if they find some discrepancies, they would have to file a suit in circuit court.”

Tuesday’s runoff was the follow-up to a Dec. 19 special election called to fill the District 100 seat after former Rep. Virginia Carlton was elected to the state Court of Appeals in November. Morgan and Moore received the most votes in that election.

Official results show Morgan received 1,776 votes to 1,740 for Moore. Affidavit ballots were counted Wednesday

Moore was a member of the House from 2000-2004.
