An altercation lead to a shooting in which one Picayune resident was wounded.

The incident took place on Harvey Road in the Lee Town Community of Hancock County Dec. 31 at about 6:30 p.m., said Hancock County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Kenny Hurt.

A fist fight broke out at John Lumpkin’s home on Harvey Road in a Federal Emergency Management Agency temporary home, Hurt said. He said the fight was between Lumpkin and Dexter Jones, 50, of a Picayune address. Jones left the home to get his .22-caliber gun from his vehicle and then forced his way back inside.

After Jones forced his way back inside the home, he threatened to shoot the other individuals in the home, which consisted of some children, Lumpkin, Lumpkin’s wife and Dax Pauncey, 28, no known address. Pauncey then pulled a deringer-style handgun from the kitchen cabinet, Hurt said. Pauncey ended up shooting Jones in the chest who was then taken to Highland Community Hospital by an acquaintance before deputies responded, Hurt said. Hurt said the department called all the surrounding hospitals and asked them to look for a victim with a gunshot wound.

From Highland, Jones was taken to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg where he was recently moved to a private room.

No charges have been filed at this time because the department is waiting for a recommendation from the district attorney, but the investigation is ongoing, Hurt said.

“I advised the young man there was a good chance I would come back and get him,” Hurt said about charging Pauncey.

No other injuries were reported in the incident.
