On July 27, 1906, the community of Sandersville received town status.

To celebrate the 100th birthday of the town of Sandersville, officials and residents put together a time capsule documenting the life in Sandersville over the past year. The capsule was buried over this past weekend.

“In 100 years it can be opened,” Mayor Pat Lightsey said during Saturday’s ceremony.

Lightsey said a plaque will be placed in town hall along with documents recording the burial of the capsule to lead future generations to it.

Residents of Sandersville brought items for the capsule, and city officials prepared letters explaining the significance of many of the items, Lightsey said.

Restaurant menus, minutes from the board of aldermen meetings, photographs, calendars, birth announcements, editions of the Laurel Leader-Call and Impact, and a book on the history of Sandersville written by Jimmy Robinson were just a few of the many items placed in the capsule. A few of the most significant items were photos and letters documenting the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

It was buried in the ground at town hall.

“People 100 years from now can see what life was like in 2006,” Lightsey said.
