A surprise visit by a man who apparently believes he is the father of a woman’s son resulted in the reported abduction of the boy on Sunday.

The man, identified as Joseph Joiner, about 49 years of age, of Seneca S.C., showed up to see a child he had not seen in years, said the boy’s mother, Deina Woods. Woods said that when the child, Jacob Colby Woods, 4, was born, Joiner showed no interest in him. There is no father listed on the child’s birth certificate. She said even though he did not sign the birth certificate, she allowed him to see the boy for about five hours Sunday.

Deina Woods’ sister, Sharron Stone, said Joiner came to her house, at first mistaking Stone’s son for Deina Woods’. After Stone questioned the man about who he was, she said she called Deina Woods to see if it was okay if Joiner could come next door to see Jacob Woods. During their conversation, Stone said Joiner asked many questions about the boy, including if he had any medical conditions or if he had had any surgeries.

Deina Woods also said Joiner asked her a number of questions about the boy.

Stone said she asked some questions of her own, such as how Joiner had found the family, which he avoided answering, she said.

Stone said she went next door with Joiner but after she got tired she went back home so she did not see Joiner take Jacob Woods.

After about five hours into the visit Deina Woods said she went inside to use the bathroom, leaving Jacob Woods with Joiner.

“I went in to the house to use the bathroom and when I came back he was gone,” Deina Woods said about her son. “There wasn’t anything there to indicate that man was there to take my son.”

Stone said she saw Joiner driving a white Ford 350 dually truck with a camper attached with at least one generator. The camper is reported to have the words “Real Life” printed on the side with teal splatters professionally painted on it, Stone said. Any information about the child’s whereabouts should be directed to the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department at 601-798-5528, which is investigating the case.

“I ask him to bring my boy home,” Deina Woods said.
