Last year, Picayune’s football season ended on the campus of Wayne County High School after a loss to perennial power Wayne County.

This season, on Friday to be exact, the Maroon Tide get another shot at the War Eagles with the same stakes on the line.

Unbeaten and third ranked Picayune travels to Waynesboro for a date with unbeaten and top-ranked Wayne County at 7 p.m. And again, one team will survive and move on while one team will pack it in for the season.

“We don’t care who we play, we just know we have to play our best,” Picayune’s versatile Drew Cole said. Cole scored a pair of touchdowns from his running back spot, started at cornerback and made a big play on special teams that set up the go-ahead score for Picayune after the Maroon Tide trailed McComb Friday night at halftime.

Picayune, after trailing 16-6, came back to pull out a 33-24 win over McComb at home Friday night, while Wayne County travelled to Brookhaven and also trailed at halftime before pulling out a big 30-17 win.

“Our team has a lot of character,” Wayne County coach Marcus Boyles told the Brookhaven Daily Leader. “Brookhaven dominated the first half on offense and defense. Everything was going their way. We told our kids to keep fighting hard. I told them that Brookhaven had been down 21-7 with 6 minutes left to play two years ago (against Wayne County) and come back and won.”

Picayune also registered its second straight come from behind playoff win.
