This weekend downtown Picayune will bustle with food, commerce and fun with the Picayune Street Fair.

Picayune Main Street Manager Reba Beebe said there are many new additions to this year’s event, including two places for live entertainment and additional children’s events along with train and pony rides.

The locations for live entertainment are at East and West Canal. West Canal will host most of the live music while the live dancing events will be in front of Robbinson Electric on East Canal, Beebe said.

Bands scheduled for the event include Whoopie and Skeeter Bait at 11:30 a.m. Saturday on East Canal. Also on Saturday on West Canal there will be Whitney RUssell at 11:30 and the Blue Pearl Band from 2 to 4 p.m., Beebe said. On Sunday, Petty Bones performs on West Canal at 1 p.m.

All day on East Canal there will be performances from local dancers, dance schools and martial artists, Beebe said. Talented singers and instrumentalists will entertain throughout the two-day Street Fair.

To help raise funds to repair the fence around the Shay Engine that was damaged during Hurricane Katrina caps, visors, and t-shirts with the “Old South New Charm” logo on them will be sold, Beebe said.

This year’s Picayune Chistmas ornament also will be on sale. This year the featured ornament will be Frostop and next year will be the Angelica Church, she said.

Since 1996, when the Picayune Street Fair began, the committees have worked to improve the quality of Street Fair vendors and the uniqueness of crafters, which has resulted in impressive growth and an event for all to enjoy, according to a release from Main Street. This year all the vendor spots have been taken and the excess has spilled over to the spring street fair.

The fall season of the Picayune Street Fair will feature approximately 250 vendors selling antiques, collectibles, art, crafts, jewelry, unique T-shirts and items for shoppers of all ages. There will be about 20 food and beverage booths serving some of the best Cajun, Greek, barbecue, seafood, and South Mississippi cuisine, the release states.

Other events include an antique car show on Saturday sponsored by the Boulevard Cruisers. The Boulevard Cruisers will entertain everyone throughout the day with great oldies but goodies.

Double K Productions will be in charge of live entertainment to be located in the parking lot of Robinson Electric, 310 East Canal, while Melanie McDonald will be in charge of live entertainment located on W. Canal St. on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 5, from 12 noon to 5 p.m.

For the more adventurous, helicopter rides will be offered by Keith Hamilton for his 4th Street Fair.

Train rides by Paul Sullivan will be available for the enjoyment of both adults and children. Also, the popular rock wall, pony rides, mechanical bull, and even one of the local Boy Scout groups will have a rope bridge to challenge those of all ages.

East Canal and South Haugh will have children’s activities by Mitchell Amusements.

The Street Fair touts an array of antique and gift shops, health and fitness centers, an herbal apothecary shop, specialty shops, and locally owned restaurants and cafes. The downtown shops will remain open throughout the Street Fair.
