State troopers say at least four people died in traffic accidents in Mississippi during the long Thanksgiving holiday period, including two Memphis-area men in a one-vehicle crash in Marshall County.

The Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol said the holiday weekend traffic period began at 6 p.m. Wednesday and ended at midnight Sunday.

During last year’s Thanksgiving holiday, eight people died on the state’s highways.

The Memphis-area men, identified as Marko Caesar Overaz, no age available, and Lino Moreno Salazar, 25, died Sunday morning about a mile north of the Marshall-Lafayette county line, authorities said. Troopers said six others in the vehicle were injured.

Staff Sgt. Tommy Coleman said the men were traveling north on Mississippi 7 in a 1999 Chevy Suburban when the vehicle veered off the pavement, then overturned when the driver tried to return to the roadway.

Overa and Salazar were thrown from the vehicle and killed, said Marshall County Coroner John Garrison.

Three of the injured were taken by helicopter to Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Coleman said. Paco Moreno was listed in stable condition while Enrique Moreno and Amador Alyandro were listed in critical condition. Their ages were not available. Three others were taken by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Coleman said. Bennie Camucho, 26, was listed in critical condition. Diago Oroco, 20, underwent surgery on Sunday afternoon. Jesus Overa, 18, was treated and released.

The accident remains under investigation, Coleman said.

A second crash occurred about 4:30 a.m. Saturday on U.S. 84, killing a Gilbertown, Ala., man.

Coleman said Wayne Edward Geatches, 35, was eastbound in a 1998 Ford Explorer about six miles east of Waynesboro when he collided with a westbound 2005 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Donald Singleton, 25, of Waynesboro. The collision happened in the eastbound lane of U.S. 84, Coleman said.

A Greenville man was the fourth traffic fatality over the Thanksgiving weekend, troopers said.

Anthony Williams, 25, died at the scene of a five-vehicle wreck on U.S. 82, one mile east of Leeland, Staff Sgt. Jimmie Dale Thomas said. The accident occurred around 10:20 p.m. Sunday.
