A new fitness trail was constructed to help Picayune South Side Upper and Lower Elementary schools with their wellness policy.

South Side Upper received help Saturday morning in installing the new fitness trail from First Baptist Church of Picayune Brotherhood. The new trail had several stations with instructions on each exercise to help participants perform the exercises properly, said Dawn Bechtel, Safe Harbor Grant Coordinator.

The trail was funded with assistance from a Safe Harbor grant through Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation. The grant has set aside funds for two fitness trails, one at South Side Upper and another to be built at the Center for Alternative Education, Bechtel said.

Through the 20 stations along the fitness trail, participants begin with warm-up exercises and work up to full-blown exercise and then perform cool-down exercises, Bechtel said.

The trail will fit right in with the wellness policy every Picayune school district campus follows, said South Side Lower Principal Joaun Lee.

“This will be an important component of out physical education program,” Lee said.

Adults as well as children can benefit from the fitness trail, she said.

Safe Harbor’s Bechtel said the organization would like to thank the members of First Baptist Church of Picayune for their help in constructing the fitness trail.
