An unidentified Pascagoula woman who was found severely beaten on the side of a rural road remains in critical but stable condition at Singing River Hospital, authorities said.

Jackson County Sheriffs Lt. Kim McClenic said deputies worked through the weekend trying to piece together a timeline of events that led up to the beating.

One suspect was interviewed Saturday, but no arrests have been made, he said.

The 27-year-old victim was discovered on a dirt path off Pollock Ferry Road, near Old Stage Road in the Orange Grove community. She was covered in blood and had been struck in the head 12 times with an unknown object, police said.

Initially, deputies feared the injuries were life threatening, but the woman has improved since then.

Deputies said they think the attack occurred Friday between 3 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Deputies are awaiting security tapes from a local gas station, which will confirm her last known whereabouts.

Sheriff Mike Byrd has said the department was developing leads. He would not say if the woman had been raped.
