A Meridian man was hospitalized Tuesday after being shot by police, authorities said.

Police Chief Benny DuBose said Alfred Sheffield was shot Monday night after officers were able to stop his vehicle.

DuBose, who was not at the scene at the time of the shooting, said once he was stopped, “(Sheffield) got out of the vehicle and pulled a weapon.”

DuBose said Sheffield was hit by three gun shots fired by police. He said Sheffield’s injuries were not life-threatening, based on reports he’d received from Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center — where Sheffield was taken after the shooting.

There was no report available on Sheffield’s condition.

The officer who fired the shots was “shaken up,” DuBose said. An external investigation of the shooting already is under way by the Mississippi Highway Patrol, he said.

“We supposedly have all this on video,” DuBose said.

DuBose said he’s confident the officers responded appropriately.

“I think we’ll be able to present evidence that this was a justified shooting beyond any reasonable doubt,” he said.
