Three accidents occurred Tuesday, two on the interstate and one on Sycamore Road.

One of the interstate accidents involved a near miss, and the other appeared to have been caused by a possible dodge and over-compensation. The one on Sycamore Road occured early in the morning.

In the southbound lane of Interstate, 59 an 18-wheeler is believed to have dodged a tree falling onto the interstate, however the incident is still under investigation, said Mississippi Highway Patrol Corporal Brad Garrett.

For whatever reason, the truck made evasive maneuvers and ran off the interstate, Garrett said. The large vehicle landed on its side, spilling its cargo of carpet along the right-of-way. Nobody was injured in the accident, Garrett said.

A half mile down the same stretch of interstate, Highway Patrol Trooper James M. Westbrook and another vehicle were run off the interstate as Westbrook attempted to pass the vehicle, he said. Westbrook was almost hit as he attempted to pass the vehicle, which was in the right-hand lane and which moved over into the left lane during his attempt to pass, he said.

When the driver of the red pickup truck in the right lane noticed what was about to happen, the driver over compensated and ran off the side of the interstate into the tree line while Westbrook ran off the right side of the interstate, Westbrook said.

Westbrook was unscathed, while the passenger, Bonalandis Hymel, 60, 113 Poplar St. Bridge City, La., of the red pickup was airlifted out by helicopter with life threatening injuries and the driver Norman Hymel, 64 of the same address was taken to Forrest General Hospital for moderate injuries, according to a report from the Highway Partrol.

Another accident occurred at about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday on Sycamore Road. The driver identified as Laura Samantha Dugas, 37 of 6 Magnolia Dr., ran off the road breaking a leg and possibly an arm, according to reports from the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department.

Dugas also suffered a chest injury due to the air bag deployment, the report states. Dugas was taken to Highland Community Hospital for treatment, the report states.
