All three Pearl River County high school football teams will allow their fans a chance to meet them up close and personally over the next week or so.

Poplarville kicks things off on Friday, with Meet the Hornets night set for 6:30 p.m., at Dobie Holden Stadium on the Pearl River Community College campus. The Poplarville Middle School team will also be on hand.

Then, on Saturday, new Pearl River Central head coach Jeremy Weir will present his first squad to the public with Meet the Blue Devils Night at 6:30 at the PRC Stadium. Following that will be the first PRC Alumni Game around 7:30 p.m.

On Monday, Picayune gets into the swing of things as Meet the Tide Night will take place on Monday, Aug. 14th at the Picayune High Stadium at 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Picayune Varsity Cheerleaders and admission is $2 per person, and concessions will be sold.

Reserved football tickets on sale at PRCC

POPLARVILLE – Reserved season football tickets are now on sale at Pearl River Community College.

Tickets for all four home games, with seats in the chair-backed section on the 50-yard line are $48 each. Individual game selection in the reserved section are $12 per ticket per game.

The Pearl River Wildcats, defending MACJC State champions for the past three years, will open their 2006 season with a road game at Mississippi Delta Community College on Thursday, Aug. 31. The first home game is Thursday, Sept. 7, against Coahoma Community College. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Other road games this fall include Copiah-Lincoln Community College on Thursday, Sept. 21, Holmes Community College on Thursday, Oct. 7, Jones Junior College on Saturday, Oct. 14, and Hinds Community College on Thursday, Oct. 26.

Other home games this fall include Gulf Coast Community College on Thursday, Sept. 14, East Central Community College on Thursday, Sept. 28, and Southwest Community College on Saturday, Oct. 21 (Homecoming).

Season ticket holders will have first choice of seats and complimentary parking near the stadium. General admission tickets this season are $4 for students and $7 for adults.

The Wildcats, under fifth-year head football coach Tim Hatten, will kick off fall drills on Aug. 9. Meet the Wildcats will be held Thursday, Aug. 24.

Poplarville All-Stars

The Poplarville 11-12 year old boys baseball team beat Petal American 8-7 and Lumberton 8-7 to win the Subdistrict Tournament and move into the district Tournament recently.

During the District Tournament the Poplarville All-Star team beat Hattiesburg National 9-3 and Green County 3-2 to place 3rd in the District Tournament. The Subdistrict Tournament was held in Beaumont July 6-9. The District Tournament started July 13th in Hattiesburg.

Picayune All-Stars

The Picayune 12-year-old baseball all-star team recently finished four in the world series in Baton Rouge, La., recently.

The team qualified for the event by finishing fourth in the state tournament previously.

At the world series, Picayune finished fourth out of 14 teams. Two players, Ben Hickman and Javonte Wilson were nominated to the all-tournament team, and Wilson was also named the defensive most valuable player of the tournament.

Oak Grove’s Keeler inks with Wildcats

POPLARVILLE — Oak Grove basketball standout Mychael Keeler has signed on with the Pearl River Community College Wildcats for the 2006-2007 season, says PRCC head coach Richard Mathis.

Keeler was a three-year starter for coach Anthony Stallings Warriors. During the 2005-2006 season, Keeler averaged 21 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and three steals a game. He earned All-District 8-5A honors his senior season and was named co-Most Valuable Player with LeBaron Weathers, who will also suit with the Pearl River this fall.

“Mychael is an excellent athlete with a great body,” Mathis said.

Roane takes JCJC Helm

Former PRCC assistant basketball coach Kyle Roane is the new head coach at Jones Junior College. Roane joins the Bobcat staff after spending the past year as assistant men’s basketball coach at Pearl River Community College.

Prior to that, he was boys head coach at Forrest County AHS for two seasons and an assistant at Southern Miss for seven seasons.
