Poplarville wins pair to open season in softball

Poplarville opened the slow pitch softball season with a pair of wins Tuesday night in the annual Pete Jackson Memorial Tournament at the Poplarville High School Field.
The Lady Hornets opened the event by smashing Purvis 13-0, then followed that by nipping Hattiesburg 4-2 in the nightcap.
In the win over Purvis, Larke Nightengale smacked a triple and a double and drove in four runs for Poplarville, while Kayla Ross had a pair of singles and two runs batted in and Wren Nightengale drove in a pair of runs with a double.
Megan Ladner had two singles and an RBI for the Lady Hornets, while Gina Martinez had a pair of singles and Kelcey Vamos had a run scoring single as well.
In the win over Hattiesburg, Irena Stringer had a single and a double and drove in a run while Vamos chipped in with two singles. Taylor Meyers recorded an RBI-single and Ladner added an RBI-double. Also, Ross had a pair of singles.
Meyers picked up the pitching win in both games.
The Lady Hornets, 2-0 on the year, now are off until Saturday when they meet Moss Point in the tournament at 9 a.m., and then take on Enterprise in the last game of the event at 6 p.m.
The tourney continues Thursday when Picayune joins the action. The Lady Tide meets Petal at 5 p.m., and then plays Moss Point at 8 p.m., with Petal and Moss Point meeting at 6:30.
On Friday, Picayune meets Purvis at 5 p.m., and then takes on Long Beach right after that at 6:30.
• The Lady Tide stand 2-1 on the season after falling to Biloxi at home on Tuesday night 5-3.
Biloxi jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead and Picayune cut the deficit to one run at one point but could never get even.
