More federal money is on the way to reimburse Mississippi communities for the costs of housing Hurricane Katrina evacuees and repairing damage from last year’s hurricanes.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is allocating $423 million in block grant money for the purpose.

That is Mississippi’s share of the $5.2 billion provided under the 2006 Emergency Hurricane Supplemental Appropriations Bill.

The bill raises the federal reimbursement rate for hurricane damage claims to a 90-10 federal-local ratio.

HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson announced the grant Friday.

Jackson said Alabama will receive $21.2 million; Florida, $100 million; and Texas, $428.6 million.
