The Mississippi Supreme Court has upheld the 20-year sentence of Anderson Curry II for aggravated assault.

Curry was convicted in Bolivar County in 2004. He was acquitted of burglary and kidnapping counts.

Curry was accused of stabbing Stephanie Cummins on Dec. 6, 2001.

Prosecutors said when Cummins came home that night, a burglar attacked her and stabbed her multiple times. When the attacker went to find a towel for her, Cummins escaped to a neighbor’s house. The burglar drove off in Cummins’ car, prosecutors said.

On appeal, Curry argued that the charges of aggravated assault, burglary and kidnapping were so entwined that acquittal on one should mean acquittal on all.

Presiding Justice Kay Cob, writing Thursday for the court, said the court agreed with prosecutors that the evidence supported the aggravated assault conviction.

Cob said authorities found Curry’s fingerprint at the scene and found clothes, a knife, shoes and other things that the perpetrator had allegedly worn or used during the attack. Cob said Cummins identified Curry from a voice tape and in a photo lineup.
