The Mississippi Supreme Court announced Thursday a 30-day suspension for Pearl River County Justice Court Judge Nell Y. Cowart for alleged misconduct that included talking to people about cases outside the courtroom.

The Mississippi Judicial Performance Commission had filed a complaint with the court in February.

The commission said Cowart admitted to some facts in the allegations but denied that her actions were misconduct.

The commission also alleged that Cowart presided over a case in which she had earlier recused herself and had improperly remanded cases to the file, taking no action on them.

The Supreme Court, in addition to the suspension without pay, ordered a public reprimand of Cowart during the next term of circuit court.
