Dead trees left in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina are falling on power lines and causing scattered power outages.

The most recent incident took place Monday in the Nicholson area at about 6:30 p.m. when a dead tree fell across a power line breaking three poles cutting power to about 62 homes, said Coast Electric Communications Assistant April Lollar. Workers were able to restore power to the area at about 1 a.m., Lollar said.

Another incident took place Saturday in the county when widely scattered outages were caused by other dead trees falling on lines, she said.

Coast Electric did take measures after the storm to ensure such incidents would not happen, Lollar said. Dead trees in Coast Electric right of ways were removed by crews, but taller trees that were outside the company’s right of way are falling on lines, she said. The trees mostly fall when storms come through the area with relatively high winds, she said.

“Anytime we have heavy storms coming through we’re having these scattered outages,” Lollar said.
