The 20th edition of the state’s largest outdoor show, the Mississippi Wildlife Extravaganza, will open its doors on Friday August 4th and run thru Sunday August 6th.

Perennial favorites such as Terry Vandeventer with Snakes of Mississippi, Preston Pittman talking turkey, Jason Reynolds with the Fetch-N-Fish Bass Tub and Paul Meek making turkey calling easy for beginners will be on hand.  Anyone who appreciates “big air dogs” will want to see Jason Reynolds and his retrievers at the Fetch Tub.

The biggest hit in the line-up is the Realtree Road Trips team pulling into Mississippi Wildlife Extravaganza with Michael Waddell at the wheel to give you a real inside look at what the hunter really does for the sport he loves and what it takes to bring that superior hunting footage to you.

Waddell has become the icon for the new upcoming hunters. This will be a huge hit for the Extravaganza to have him on stage. Waddell’s seminars on the main stage will be Friday night at 7:00pm, Saturday at 10:00am, 1:30pm, and 5:00pm. Sunday the Roadtrip lineup wraps up with a final seminar at 12:00pm.

Growing in popularity, MWF is hosting the second annual Cutest Camo Kids Contest sponsored by The Mean Mallard and MS Kids Magazine where children ages 2 – 7 years compete for the Cutest Camo Kid title and all participants are entered into a drawing for wonderful prizes. 

As always, there will be plenty of big bucks on hand at the Big Buck display sponsored by Pennington Seed. Ducks Unlimited will host their State and Regional Duck Calling Contest in addition to the Youth Duck Calling Contest. 

The Extravaganza comes complete with photography seminars by Joe Mac Hudspeth, Jan Allinder and Mitch Wolnerton for the hunter who prefers to shoot wildlife with a camera.  

The Wildlife Extravaganza will be held at the Trade Mart on the Fairgrounds in Jackson, MS.  Show opens Friday, August 4th, at 3 p.m. – 9 p.m., Saturday, August 5th, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Sunday, August 6th, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.  Admission is $8 for adults, $3 for children ages 6 – 12 and children ages 5 and under is free. Take home a “buck” on Friday when admission is $7 for adults and children under 12 are free.

The Mississippi Wildlife Extravaganza has been named one of the Top 20 Events in August by the Southeast Tourism Society so be sure to put this on your to do list, I promise you will love it. 

Archery Competition results

The ongoing summer series of the Southern Sportsman/Deer Stand Archery Contest is winding down and this week the competition was tight.

The button bucks division was won by Audrey Furr with a 64. Second place was taken by Lucien Failla with 36, third was Morella Failla with 36 and fourth place was Devin Fore.

Travis Fore took first place in the spikes division and DJ Failla rounded out the second spot. In the youth division it was a shoot off as always in one of the spots and this week Jordy Meadows took the top spot.

Jordy took first with a score of 38. The second place hole was won by Colby Wallace with a score of 30. Third place was taken by Brandon Lossett, fourth was Clint Hensarling and the top five was rounded out by Alexander Poole.

In the adult hunter division the top three spots were John “Hoss” Simmons in first with a score of 62. Second place was Jeremy McBeth with a score of 60 and third was Gary Furr winning the shoot off against Jimmy McBeth with scores of 56.

The Open division tope three were jimmy McBeth in first with 58, John “Hoss” Simmons in second with a 56 and Time Fore with a score of 54.

The scores are getting better and it is still very enjoyable to come out and shoot with everyone. Be sure to get your bow out of the closet and come join in the fun.    

Opening day of dove season scheduled

Well the time is drawing closer every day till hunting season will open. Dove season this year in the north zone, north of Hwy 85 and west of 35, will open September 2 till October 24th. The south zone, zone 2, will open from September 23rd till October 15th.

This is the christening weekend for many hunters and is the perfect time to get together and see everybody.

Take safety and precaution when you hit the fields this year and be sure to take your young folks with you and show them how much fun a good dove shoot can be.

Now is the time to get those fields ready and I advise you to take advantage of any sales on shot shells you can find cause the price is going up everyday and industry insiders say they don’t see any stopping in sight.
