Dan McDonnell will replace Lelo Prado as Louisville’s baseball coach, the university announced Tuesday.

McDonnell, 35, has spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach at Mississippi. During his six years in Oxford, McDonnell helped the Rebels to six straight winning seasons and an average of 40 wins a season.

“He is a high energy guy,” said Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich. “When we met him, he was the most prepared of any candidate I’ve brought in on an interview in any sport.”

McDonnell played four seasons at The Citadel in South Carolina, helping the Bulldogs to the 1990 College World Series. He then spent eight years at his alma mater as an assistant coach before going to Mississippi.

The Cardinals went 31-29 in 2006, including a 17-10 mark in their first season in the Big East. Louisville won 12 straight games late in the season before losing to Notre Dame in the Big East Conference Championship.

Prado stepped down after 11 years as Louisville’s head coach on June 16 to become the head coach at South Florida.
