A late night accident resulted in a driver being arrested for DUI and for possession of heroin.
Shortly before midnight on Tuesday, Picayune police were dispatched to a traffic accident on Interstate 59, just south of Exit 1, said Jeremy Magri, assistant to the chief of police.
Investigation at the scene found that the two vehicles involved in the crash were traveling north when vehicle one struck the rear of vehicle two, said Magri. “This caused both vehicles to run off the roadway,” he said.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged.
While on the scene, officers noticed that the driver and passenger of vehicle one appeared to be impaired, Magri said.
The driver was identified as John Joseph Moore Jr., 33, and the passenger was identified as Benard John Moore, 37, both of 48 Ginger St., he said.
Magri said officers saw several pills on the ground outside of vehicle one. Retrieved from the scene was “six white pills, identified as hydrocodone and one white pill identified as Xanax,” he said.
Upon conducting a pat-down search of Benard Moore, “Officers located a black, cloth bag containing syringes and two burnt spoons that contained residue believed to be heroin,” Magri said.
A pat down of John Moore led officers to recover “three plastic bags that contained an off-white substance, believed to be heroin, from inside of a lighter holder on his belt,” he said.
Benard Moore and John Moore were taken into custody and transported to the Criminal Justice Center.
John Moore was booked on charges of felony possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and DUI, Magri said.
Benard Moore was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, he said.
The two are being held at the Picayune Jail, awaiting a judge to set their bonds.
Magri said an ambulance was dispatched to the scene of the crash, but no one was transported.
