Carriere native and graduate of Pearl River Central High School, Morgan McCormick has been named to the 2013 Mississippi State University Homecoming Court.
McCormick is the daughter of Lt. Col. Berry McCormick and Debra McCormick of Carriere.
Morgan said her sorority, Phi Theta Phi, nominated her to the homecoming court ballot this year and then she was one of two sophomores chosen to be on the homecoming court.
She said every year, the sorority nominates one of its sisters to the homecoming court ballot and this year she was chosen.
“It’s a really big honor. In a school of 23,000 people, you wouldn’t think a girl from such a small town in the state would get chosen for this honor,” Morgan said.
Morgan said she grew up a Mississippi State fan because her father, Berry McCormick, is an alumnus and also a fan. Unfortunately, her father will not walk her out onto the field Saturday.
Lt. Col. McCormick is the commander of the Mississippi Air National Guard 255 Air Control Squadron in Gulfport and is deployed to the Middle East.
Instead, Morgan’s grandfather, James McCormick, will walk her onto the field Saturday.
Morgan said she knows her father wishes he could be there and “it is a little heartbreaking that he isn’t going to be there” because he is such a big Mississippi State fan.
“He is so proud, of course, and just the fact that she is on the court, it’s exciting, so we can’t be too sad,” said mother Debra McCormick.
Debra also said that while she hates that her husband can’t be there Saturday, she has to put things into perspective. She said there are men in his unit who have missed their daughters’ weddings and the birth of their children.
This week, Morgan got to participate in many homecoming week activities. She said the court attended the homecoming week kick-off rally, met players on the football, basketball and soccer teams; attended the pep rally; met members of the student government and hung out with the students on campus. She also got called out several times during a comedy show by Finesse Mitchell, a former Saturday Night Live cast member.
Friday afternoon, Morgan rode in the homecoming parade with Debra McCormick watching proudly.
Morgan is an aerospace engineering major and said she is just focusing on getting through school right now.
Morgan said she wanted to become an engineer, and after talking with her father, who is also an engineer, and researching the university’s programs, she chose aerospace engineering.
“She’s always been a very good student and she works really hard. We are very lucky that she makes good grades and works hard,” Debra McCormick said.
