Former Miss. lawman sentenced for fraud

Charleston — A former law enforcement officer must serve at least a year in prison for insurance fraud.

Judge Andrew Baker of Charleston sentenced 47-year-old Marvin Johnson to three years in prison, but suspended two years — and spend two years on probation after he is released.

Johnson is a former Bolivar County sheriff’s deputy and Rosedale police officer.

He was charged in August 2007 with trying to collect insurance in 2005 on a car he had bought, claiming that it had been stolen.

He was convicted in May in Panola County Circuit Court.

In addition to prison and probation, the judge also ordered Johnson to pay $41,986.90 in expenses and penalties.
