Arrest made in 1998 security guard slaying

CANTON — After nearly 11 years, police have made an arrest in the slaying of a security guard at a Canton apartment complex.

The cold case unit of the Canton Police Department reopened the 1998 case and a Madison County grand jury indicted 29-year-old Marcus Reed on a murder charge in the death of George Reid Jr. Marcus Reed was arrested on Thursday.

In Nov. 1998, authorities say Marcus Reed was involved in an altercation with George Reid and another security guard as they attempted to escort him from the complex. Police say Marcus Reed later retrieved a gun and returned to the apartment complex and shot George Reid.

Police say witnesses and evidence were found that implicated Marcus Reed as the shooter.
