The Pearl River Central girls saw their four game winning streak snapped during a two day a visit to the Forrest County AHS Invitational Tournament.
The Lady Devils dropped a 59-45 decision to the homestanding and unbeaten Lady Aggies Thursday night, and then after taking a lead into intermission against Stone Count Friday afternoon watched as the Lady 'Cats rallied big in the second half to pull out a 56-39 win.
The losses drop PRC to 6-6 on the season.
Against Stone, The Lady Devils overcame a slow first quarter start with a 7-0 run capped with a 3-pointer by Tara Mitchell to take an 11-6 lead early in the second period.
A couple of baskets by Jessica Powers and a few free throws by Caroline Lumpkin gave PRC a 21-14 lead at halftime.
But the Lady 'Cats used some quickness and defensive pressure to outscore PRC 11-2 to open the second half, and then took advantage of some poor ball-handling and cold shooting by the Lady Devils to capture the win. "Their pressure was the difference," first year Lady Devils head coach Danielle Dewitt said. "We just didn't handle it well."
Lumpkin registered a double-double to pace PRC, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Christa Owens tallied a game high 23 points for Stone, including 16 of those in the decisive second half.
The Lady Devils were coming off a seven point win over Stone Tuesday night.
Forrest County ran it record to 11-0 with Thursday night's win over PRC, even though the Lady Devils brief lead in the third period was the first time the Lady Aggies had been behind all season in the second half.
Powers fueled the PRC attack with her fourth triple-double in two weeks, as she scored 16 points, pulled down 12 boards and had 12 blocks. Lumpkin added 16 points and six rebounds to the losing effort, and Mitchell added nine points on a trio of 3-point shots.
The Lady Devils don't play again until traveling to Poplarville on Monday, Dec. 17th.
The PRC boys faced off with powerful St. Martin late Friday night for the tourney title. The Blue Devils beat homestanding FCAHS in Thursday's opening day of play 46-38, as Ashton Woodson scored a game high 22 and Walker Roberts added nine points to the winning effort.
Also on Thursday night Ed Simpson hit for 34 points, including seven of 11 3-pointers, to lead St. Martin (11-1) a 69-48 win over Stone County. The Yellow Jackets were coming off their first loss of the season, 56-51 to Gulfport on Tuesday
