The Picayune Memorial Junior High football team rolled passed the Long Beach Bearcats 40-6 Thursday night to become the District IV 8th grade champions.
Late in the first quarter, Tyler Penton had a 10-yard rushing touchdown that put the Maroon Tide in the lead, 6-0. Shortly after, Long Beach quarterback Cortland Gayten scored with a 10-yard rushing touchdown, tying the score at 6-6 as both conversion attempts were unsuccessful.
With less than a minute remaining in the first quarter, Picayune's Shaun Anderson ran for a three-yard touchdown and the Maroon Tide led 12-6. Anderson led the Tide with three touchdowns in the game and ran for 97 yards.
Scoring was quiet throughout the second quarter, but with 51 seconds before the half, Penton completed a pass to Devin Simmons for a 86-yard touchdown and the Tide was up 18-6.
An 85-yard touchdown pass from Penton to Ronald Polk put the Tide up 24-6.
The Tide continued to storm past Long Beach in the second half of the game when Anderson ran for a four-yard touchdown and brought the Tide to 32-6 over the Bearcats.
Anderson finished off the 40-6 win with an eight-yard touchdown run.
Picayune finished the season a perfect 9-0.
