Both Pearl River Central and Picayune picked up big home wins in Division 8-5A action Friday night.
The Blue Devils, behind the pitching of unbeaten Dylan Spiers, beat visiting Long Beach 1-0.
Spiers moved to 7-0 in the complete game effort, scattering five hits and striking out seven. Caelb Morales had two of PRC's three hits on the night, and drove in the only run of the game with an RBI-single in the first frame. Spiers and his defense then made that lead stand up the rest of the way, including a backhanded stop by Morales at shortstop in the top of the seventh to preserve the lead.
PRC remains in first place in the league with a 9-2 mark,and the Blue Devils are 13-5 overall. Head coach Neil Walther's team can clinch the division title and a first round bye in the playoffs with one more league win.
Meanwhile, Picayune knocked off visiting West Harrison 5-2. Jacob Taylor got the win and Mark Wood earned a solid save.
Nick Marble paced Picayune at the plate with three hits, including a triple and a double, and he drove in a run. Gary Van Buren had a pair of hits and an RBI as well, while Kyle Dillard drove in a run also.
Picayune is solidly in second place in the district standings, and can earn a state playoff berth with just one more league win.
Also, Poplarville fell to homestanding Forrest County AHS 2-1 in Region 8-4A play Friday night.
Blake Ladner took the loss, and Zac Houston had two hits for the Hornets.
Picayune travels to Columbia today, while PRC hosts Biloxi. Poplarville travels to Gulfport today as well.
