Poplarville opened Region 8-4A play with a 12-0 shutout win over visiting Forrest County AHS Monday night in prep fast-pitch softball action.
Lady Hornet standout pitcher Rachel Hickman hurled her fourth abbreviated no-hitter of the season, striking out seven in the four inning game. Hickman now has 102 strikeouts in just eight games and 49 innings pitched on the season. Both she and the Lady Hornets are 8-0 on the year.
Shelby McGill had a pair of triples to pace Poplarville to the win. Up net for the Lady Hornets is a trio of games in the Clarkdale Tournament over the weekend.
Before beating the Lady Aggies to open league play, Poplarville was coming off a pair of wins in the Harrison Central Tournament. The Lady Hornets beat Ocean Springs 2-1 and West Harrison 3-0.
Hickman combined for 28 strike outs in the two wins, and threw a no-hitter against West Harrison. Drew Smith had a double for PHS in the win over the Lady Hurricanes, while Tori Fairchild and Madison Nodurft each drove in runs.
In the win over the Lady Greyhounds, Hichman, McGill and Sam Gentry all had doubles and Smith drove in both runs.
Also, Picayune played a pair of games in the Stone County Tournament over the weekend. The Lady Tide beat Forrest County AHS 12-2, as Picayune scored 11 runs on nine hits to take a commanding lead in the first inning.
Tiffany Devore smacked a two run home run and Brooke Ladner had an RBI-triple in that outburst. Bethany Crawford picked up the win, allowing just three hits.
East Central beat Picayune 3-1. Alysa Scott drove in the only run for Picayune. Crawford took the loss as the Lady Hornets overcame an early deficit and won the game with a pair of runs in the sixth.
Picayune's home game against Greene County that was slated for Monday night was rained out. Those same two teams are slated to meet Friday night in Leakesville.
Picayune then hosts Poplarville on Monday night.
